How it happened

Top 2nd: Melon, go-ahead home run Los Angeles struck first and immediately showed that they were not going to sit back and let Chicago's offense dictate the game. Melon's homer put the Reapers ahead and gave them an early foothold.

Bottom 4th: Aebutler, game-tying double Chicago finally answered in the fourth. Aebutler's double brought the Breeze level at 1-1, and for a while it looked like the game might settle into exactly the tight, low-scoring contest Los Angeles wanted. But the Reapers did not break. Top 8th: Calx, go-ahead 2-run homer This was the swing of the game. With the score tied, Calx delivered a two-run blast that completely changed the pressure on Chicago. Instead of the Breeze entering the late innings with a chance to walk off Game 1, they were suddenly chasing a two-run deficit. Los Angeles added another run to make it 4-1, and the upset was complete.

The biggest takeaway

Before the series, Chicago's 226 runs scored compared with Los Angeles' 155 suggested that the Breeze had the overwhelming offensive advantage. But Game 1 demonstrated exactly why Los Angeles was dangerous. The Reapers held Chicago to one run. That is the blueprint. They did not try to outslug a team that had scored 71 more runs during the regular season. They kept Chicago's offense contained, waited for their opportunities, and then delivered the decisive blow in the eighth. And that eighth-inning homer is especially important.
